Mahindra is set to launch the second gen SsangYong Rexton. This car would be launched designed on a new platform. It would be based on a new engine model that would be paired with different transmission systems. There would also be extensive technology and equipment on board the new gen model.
This car was showcased by Mahindra at the Auto Expo 2018. This car, manufactured by SsangYong Rexton, would come in with the Mahindra badge in the country. It is likely that the car would be launched in the festive season this year. The Rexton in its new avatar would be locally assembled at the Chakan facility of the company. However the car is sold as CKD units that are brought in from South Korea. Hence, those who would be interested in buying the car need to be ready to pay a higher premium due to the increase in import duties this year.
There are certain aspects that are unique about this imported car. It is yet unsure what Mahindra would rename it as when it launches in the country. This was announced when the showcasing of the car happened at Auto Expo 2018. The new gen Rexton was first showcased at the Seoul Motor Show in 2017. The SUV was also launched in Europe in the later part of 2017. Now it would be made available in India by the second quarter.
The car would compete with titans like Toyota Fortuner and Ford Endeavour. It is a full size SUV that is a seven seater and is a body on frame car design. The competitor cars offering premier features and facelift versions, would offer stiff competition for Rexton. The limitation that this gen model would have in the country is the higher price due to being sold as CKD units as compared to Ford Endeavour and Toyota Fortuner that are locally produced. However, it is expected that Rexton in the new gen model would undercut the existing prices of Toyota and Ford in order to woo customers.

If we look at the price range of the competitor models, Ford Endeavour and Toyota Fortuner, their base variants start at Rs 26 lakhs while the outgoing model of SsangYong Rexton had a starting price of Rs 23 lakhs. It is expected that the same price difference would be maintained with the new gen model.
